Highlights

A pet in every lesson: nine living little creatures to keep you company. Your pet no longer waits for you in the Pet Academy. Once adopted, it floats at the edge of your regular lessons: the moment an idea clicks, tap the pet, a small window opens beside the lesson, and you explain it while it is fresh. If you can make it clear to your pet, you have really learned it. The pets themselves are new as well. The preset looks have grown from three to nine (cat, dog, dragon, fox, rabbit, owl, panda, deer, and penguin), and every one of them has come alive: it breathes, blinks, and has its own expressions and signature little moves; it leans in when you speak, and opens its mouth and nods when it answers. Not hatched yet? The ring around the small egg on your screen fills a little more with every lesson you take.

A smart flashcard review system: the right card, just before you forget it. Forgetting what you studied is usually not about effort; it is about reviewing at the wrong time. 5.5 adds a complete Smart Review to flashcards. Following the memory curve, it estimates how well you still hold each card right now, puts the ones you are about to lose first, and hands them to you one at a time. After answering, tell it whether you guessed, found it hard, or found it easy, and it schedules the card's next appearance: what you know well comes back at longer and longer intervals, and what you do not comes back soon. There is no daily quota and no finish line. Review a few cards in a spare five minutes, or keep going all evening; switch devices and your progress carries on. And when a lesson ends, its new cards now come to you by themselves.

A refreshed interface: cleaner, and easier on the eye. Nearly everything you look at every day has been refined in this release. The lesson composer, the top bar, and the Debrief panel are redesigned with fewer lines and clearer layers; flashcards, group chat, the pet classroom, and the companion voice settings share one new style; the default Paper theme moves to a warmer sand tone, so selections and highlights no longer look grey; and when you switch tabs, the underline flows to its new place like a drop of water. The layout you know has not changed. Every part of it simply looks and feels better.

Pets: with you in class, listening to you teach

  • Your pet in regular lessons. Its portrait floats on the right of the classroom; select it to talk. The Pet control above the input box calls it in or sends it home. It never interrupts and answers only when you speak to it.
  • Hatching progress you can see. Before the pet hatches, a small egg sits at the right edge of the app, and its ring shows the progress. It advances as you take lessons; select it to see how far there is to go.
  • A new look for the pet classroom. The pet sits at the top centre of the conversation with its name beneath. The conversation is a column the width of the input box, and individual lines no longer repeat the portrait and name. The opening of a new lesson, the wait after sending, and the wait and report at the end of a lesson have been tidied too. Past lessons under Records are unchanged.
  • Nine animated pets. Choose from nine when adopting or changing looks; each has its own expressions and little moves. Changing the look does not affect the name, personality, voice, or anything the pet has learned. You can still use your own photo (a photo is not animated).
  • A voice switch of its own. The pet's voice and the companion's voice are set separately and do not affect each other.
  • The pet waits while your companion speaks. The companion and the pet share one voice channel: if the companion is still speaking, the pet waits for it to finish; when you are talking with the pet, it answers directly.
  • The “?” beside its name. Select it for a short note on what the pet is for: it is your student, and you teach it what you have learned.
  • More complete farewell notes. Fewer cases of a pet's end-of-lesson note stopping in the middle of a sentence.

Flashcards and review

  • Cards appear after class by themselves. You do not have to wait for the whole post-class update; if the update fails and you end the lesson again, the cards come back.
  • Reserved cards are counted separately. Up to 40 reservations per lesson by selecting text, made on top of the ordinary number.
  • Smart Review. On Desktop, open it at the top of the Flashcards page. It covers every flashcard in the current profile, and a card you miss returns a few cards later. It needs a connection, so that what you reviewed on another device is not asked again here.
  • A more compact Flashcards header. The Favorites and All counts are always visible, with Select and Export on the same row.
  • Formulas display correctly in collapsed rows. Cards folded by month no longer show formula source or cut a formula in half.
  • One card, one look. Options in the flashcard library, post-class review, and Smart Review now share the same style.

Lessons and after class

  • Preferences in two parts. One applies to the whole profile and one only to the current textbook: keep “go slower” in the profile and “skip the calculation exercises” for one book.
  • Thinking depth at a glance. The classroom top bar now offers Quick / Auto / Deep, and you can also choose directly in the hover note.
  • A redesigned Debrief panel. Learning results and related actions sit in two clear columns, and the panel is more compact.
  • Lesson Voice Recap. Whole-lesson voice playback has this new name; it works as before.
  • Post-class notes export with textbook figures. Exporting the notes of one lesson, or of a whole textbook, to PDF now embeds the textbook figures the notes refer to; if a figure cannot be fetched, the export still completes.
  • Anthology lessons keep their figures on export. Fixed blank images when a lesson on an illustrated Anthology piece was exported to PDF.
  • The composer, top bar, and companion voice settings are tidied. Preferences open as a small ticket on hover, and the speed slider matches the sliders elsewhere in the app.

Textbooks, Library, and Anthology

  • Import several of your own textbooks at once. Select several files on the Bookshelf (up to 30); they are read one after another, with a result for each. Stay on the Bookshelf page while they are read. If the connection drops or no result arrives, the queue pauses and marks the book Unconfirmed rather than skipping it silently.
  • An AI Book Finder entry in the Library search row. Easy to find when you do not know what to read.
  • Library heat reflects what people are reading. Heat combines the last seven days of reading, favorites, and imports, shown as a flame with a number.
  • The Anthology introduction is now an invitation to contribute. Anthology collects short pieces of 3–50 pages, pocket books if you like. Write up the one topic you know best and send it in.

Group chat

  • Scroll back as far as you like. Reaching the top loads earlier history automatically.
  • Find what was said before. Search by text or by speaker, and select a result to return to that moment.
  • A tidied input area. It matches the lesson composer and adds a character count.

Cloud Sync and multiple devices

  • A sturdier Cloud Sync setting for this computer. Fixed a rare case in which a computer that was syncing normally fell back to Local only by itself.
  • When in doubt, you are asked first. If this computer's setting does not match the account's record, the device list shows To confirm and pauses sync; you choose whether to continue Cloud Sync or keep this computer local-only. The app does not decide for you.
  • Retry when the device list will not load. It retries a few times by itself, then shows a clear message and a Retry control.
  • Reset All Data says more. A reset also turns Cloud Sync off for this computer, and the confirmation states it.

Interface and everyday use

  • The app guide is now called Wisp. The product assistant at the top right has a new name and a new look, a little ghost, in the same place as before. Ask it how the app works or where a feature is; it already knows what is new in this release.
  • Up to four lines for the collapsed navigation motto. Each line still holds 10 Chinese characters or 24 Latin letters, and the space at the bottom left adjusts to the number of lines. Also fixed Chinese input methods being cut off before a candidate was chosen.
  • A warmer Paper theme. Selection, hover, and highlight backgrounds move to a warm sand tone and no longer look grey; other themes are unchanged.
  • More consistent selected states. Option cards, primary buttons, page titles, and shadows follow one specification, and the tab underline glides to its new position.
  • A faster Diary page. It no longer pauses on Loading when opened.
  • Teaching-language mark for worlds. Simplified Chinese now shows 简 instead of 中, matching 繁 for Traditional Chinese.
  • Other details. Assorted refinements to the top bar, the left sidebar, and the bottom-left navigation.

Phones (Cloud App and Android)

These arrive with the cloud update, which may not be on the same day as the desktop installers.

  • A pet beside your lesson on the phone too. The pet (or its egg) floats at the edge of the classroom and can be dragged to either side. Tap it to switch to your conversation with it, and tap the back control at the top left to return to class; a new control in the right-hand menu calls it in or sends it home.
  • Smart Review is the third tab on the Flashcards page, labelled Smart.
  • Toggle sliders now share one fully rounded style, and the settings rows on the pet home page line up more neatly.
  • Fixed Android asking you to pick files again when returning to a lesson with many of your own textbooks.

Installers

  • macOS Apple Silicon: 213 MB, signed and notarized by Apple
  • macOS Intel: 222 MB, signed and notarized by Apple
  • Windows x64: 187 MB, digitally signed

Who should update

We recommend 5.5.0 for all desktop users. This release is especially worthwhile if you have adopted a pet, review with flashcards regularly, or use Cloud Sync across several computers. Continue your existing studies after updating.
