Highlights

Seven languages, with four new interface and teaching languages: 日本語, 한국어, Español and Français. You can now study in Japanese, Korean, Spanish or French: the interface, companions, worlds and after-class notes switch to your chosen language, and every book in the Bookstore has a description in all four languages. Companion voices are available for each language: 63 Japanese, 97 Korean, 95 Spanish and 53 French voices. Switch in Settings → Text → Interface Language. To study in one of these languages, create a new world with that teaching language.

Online-assisted learning. When a question calls for new information, your companion can automatically search the web and list sources below its reply. A normal search costs 20,000 credits, and a notice appears while it searches. Please check the sources to judge whether the information is sufficient to answer the question.

Bookstore textbooks update automatically. When a Bookstore book receives typo corrections or new illustrations, the updated version is used the next time you start a lesson. For larger changes, such as added, removed or reordered chapters, a “New version” badge appears on your bookshelf. You decide whether to use the new version from the next lesson or wait. A book never changes in the middle of a lesson; your notes, flashcards and lesson history are unaffected.

A cover view for your bookshelf. In addition to the original text list, you can switch to a cover view from the top right of your bookshelf. The textbook you are studying is highlighted, and you can click it to continue your lesson. You can also change book cover colors and patterns to make the shelf your own.

More flexible cancellation and refunds. Within 7 days of subscribing, you receive a full refund without giving a reason; after 7 days, the unused time is refunded. Eligible subscriptions can request a refund directly on the subscription page. With a full refund within 7 days, the subscription ends immediately; if you cancel for a refund after 7 days, you can continue to use the service through the period already charged. The page shows the refund amount and when access ends.

In class

  • Classroom preferences can be up to 200 characters. Tell your companion more about what you need.
  • Pasting very long text no longer stalls the conversation. Nüwa accepts about 10,000 characters per message and the classroom about 30,000; when the limit is exceeded, the text remains in the input box and a notice appears, and the conversation is unaffected.
  • Change chapters by asking. Say “Let's study Chapter X” and “Go to this chapter” appears below the reply. If the chapter cannot be matched, you can open the table of contents. Chinese, English, Japanese, Spanish and French are supported; Korean will follow later.
  • Asked for your page only once. You won't be asked again for the same book during the current app session.
  • Amounts display more reliably. Amounts such as $8 and the text after them are preserved.
  • More complete EPUB contents. EPUBs that previously showed no recognizable table of contents can now display one; you don't need to reimport them.
  • Cleaner Markdown contents. # comments inside code blocks are no longer treated as chapter headings.
  • More reliable classroom read-aloud. A voice segment that fails or stalls is retried once automatically.
  • Japanese lessons are summarized in Japanese. When a companion looks back over a long lesson, it sees a summary in the lesson's language.
  • Clear notice when Voice Credits run out. If there isn't enough balance for a paid voice, a card appears at the bottom of the classroom: the lesson continues in text, and you can top up, switch to a free voice if one is available for the lesson's language, or continue in text. You'll also get an early reminder when credits are running low.
  • Your companion explains directly when you don't want more questions. Ask for a direct explanation or say the questions are tiring, and your companion explains that turn before returning to questions on the next.
  • Unsent text stays put. A half-written message remains in the input box after reopening the app. Each lesson keeps its own draft, which clears on sending and is stored only on this device.
  • Sources are easier to check. Replies can show the websites consulted; open the originals to check online information and textbook content separately.

After class

  • Clearer formulas in companion messages. Classroom message sharing cards can display mathematical formulas.
  • Long-lesson notes no longer cover only the second half. The main stages of the whole lesson are included; saying “only summarize this part” in class doesn't narrow the whole-lesson notes.
  • Easier note generation. A missing closing bracket is filled in instead of regenerating the whole note.
  • Export a whole lesson as MP4 with “Companion only” or “Include my voice”. The exported video can be scrubbed in Photos and WeChat.
  • The actual saved filename appears after export, including any name you chose while saving.

Pets

  • Not sure what to teach? Before a pet lesson, ask Socrates for three teaching topics based on your last seven days of study. Select one to put it in the input box.
  • The input box stays visible while your pet replies. You can prepare your next message while it speaks.
  • Pets speak your language. For English and Japanese users, the personalities and prompts of adopted preset pets no longer appear in Chinese.
  • A more compact pet classroom header. Dialogue text no longer jumps down when selecting a dialogue.
  • Smoother handoff between hatching and sync choices. After choosing cloud sync or starting on this device, you can continue hatching your pet.

Flashcards and smart review

  • Review by textbook. Choose “All textbooks” or one book in the smart review header; each book shows the number of cards due.
  • A clearer textbook selector. The wider selector makes long titles easier to read and gives the arrow and text more room.
  • A more sensible review rhythm. Pressing “Easy” repeatedly in one session won't push a card straight to two months later; if the network stalls, review pauses with a notice instead of silently ignoring taps.
  • End-of-class flashcards aren't interrupted. New cards generated while you're answering existing ones are added to the end of the queue.

Bookstore and search

  • Switch bookshelf views anytime. The default is a clean text list; use the top right of the shelf to switch to cover view. Each computer remembers your last choice.
  • Change your covers. Choose “Edit cover” from a book's “…” menu to pick a color and one of 40 patterns, with a live preview on the left. Imported books can also be customized, and changes sync between devices with cloud sync enabled.
  • More consistent cover text. Cover lettering coordinates with the interface font.
  • ⌘F / Ctrl+F opens global search, even from the input box; matches in the current lesson appear first.
  • Illustration counts in the Bookstore. Books with official illustrations show the total for the whole book.
  • A distinctive cover design on book detail pages. Bookstore and bookshelf lists stay simple, without covers.
  • Search using Spanish and French book titles.

Settings, account and statistics

  • A tidier world page. World management, companion management, setting documents and Nüwa customization have more consistent content widths; entering and saving a world name is clearer. On desktop, the current world and world list are side by side; companion portraits and names adapt to the available space.
  • Clearer companion save feedback. If saving or removing a companion fails, you'll be prompted to retry.
  • Interface languages are displayed side by side; switch with one click.
  • The study statistics dot grid opens at today and stays aligned after resizing or changing text size.
  • A clearer account page. One-time RMB plans show “Renew” on the subscription credits line as expiry approaches. After a subscription ends, the balance is paused and retained for 30 days, and renewing within that time restores it.
  • Reminders before your plan expires. For one-time RMB plans that don't renew automatically, you'll receive an email seven days before expiry and an in-app letter three days before and on the last day, with the expiry time and renewal instructions.
  • Switches are easier to see in dark themes.
  • A more harmonious Charcoal theme. Filled primary actions and selected controls use a more coordinated orange-red.
  • Simpler account version information. The account overview shows only the version number; build information remains available under About.
  • Read-aloud skips IPA phonetic symbols instead of reading them aloud.
  • New accounts receive 2 million Voice Credits to try companion voices in different languages.
  • Concrete refund examples. When you select a monthly, quarterly or annual plan, the subscription page shows a matching example of the refund amount and how long you can continue using the service after cancellation. Contact us with any questions.
  • Cancel automatic renewal. Automatically renewing Stripe subscriptions can be set not to renew on the subscription page, and remain usable through the paid period. This is separate from requesting a refund. One-time RMB subscriptions don't renew automatically and don't need cancellation.
  • “Reset All Data” is now “Clear learning data on this device”, and explains that it clears only this device, not cloud data or the account.

Cloud sync and multiple devices

  • A new computer tells you if it can't connect to the cloud at first sign-in. It retries twice, then offers “Retry” or “Start on this device” rather than silently entering local-only mode.
  • Sync is more reliable in some uncommon situations, such as power loss while confirming sync mode or an unreadable cloud roster, avoiding an unintended start or unnecessary wait.
  • “Cloud data isn't ready yet” now explains why.

Installation and updates

  • More reliable Mac update installation. The automatic update installation process has been improved.
  • Another download option: installers are also available from Socratopia's official GitHub repository.
